A Peace Pilgrimage to Assisi, Siena & Florence

Assisi, the medieval town and home of St Francis, is set amidst the peace and tranquility of the Umbrian countryside. Our visits include the twin Basilica of St Francis, the church of St Clare, the peaceful Hermitage, which was a place of retreat and meditation for Francis as well as San Damiano where St Francis received the message from the Crucifix to repair God’s church and where, later, St Clare founded her community.

From Assisi we will visit the Umbrian town of Gubbio at the foot of Mount Ingino. Then we travel to Siena for a two-night stay so we can spend a day in Siena and in Florence.

We hope to make this a memorable Pilgrimage of Peace.

Itinerary

  1. TOWARDS ASSISI

Morning flight from London Heathrow to Rome. On arrival, we meet our Italian tour manager and drive to Assisi. On arrival at our accommodation in Assisi we will have a welcome drink and dinner. Four-night stay at Monastero San Giuseppe, located in the Old Town of Assisi.

  2. IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ST FRANCIS AND ST CLARE

After breakfast, we have a walking tour of the Old Town including the New Church (Chiesa Nuova), built on the site of St Francis' house. Then continue to the basilica of St Clare, built in the second half of the 13th century. Three large flying buttresses characterize the construction. The interior is simple and bare. A flight of steps leads down to the Crypt, which contains the mortal remains of St. Clare. The chapel of the Crucifix contains the famous Byzantine crucifix (12th century), which, according to tradition, spoke to St Francis in the church of St Damiano. After Santa Chiara it will be possible for some to walk and others to drive to San Damiano, a church with a monastery built in the 12th century and where Saint Clare built her community. Here we will join together for reflection. We will have free time for lunch in the Old Town. This afternoon we enjoy a guided tour of the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. Divided into two parts: one is known as the "lower church", built in the rock on one side of Mount Subiaso between 1228 and 1230, and the other as the "upper church", built above it between 1230 and 1253, in the Gothic style. The two churches, united under the same name of "basilica", have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2000. The body of St. Francis was secretly transferred to the crypt in 1230 and was so well hidden that it was only rediscovered in 1818. Before dinner, we will have our first address: ‘The Inspiration of St Francis’, with Richard Carter. After dinner, we can enjoy a stroll in the Old Town.

  3. THE HERMITAGE OF CARCERI

This morning, we take a twisting ride by taxi above Assisi to the Hermitage of Carceri, developed around a grotto in which Saint Francis of Assisi used to retreat to pray. This is a memorable place of peace and witness, permeated with deep spirituality, kept alive by the Franciscan friars who still live there. Here we will celebrate the Eucharist in the open air. Return to the Old Town of Assisi where we have free time for lunch and to explore its wonderful architecture, hillside views as well as soaking in its unique atmosphere. Before dinner, we will have our second address: ‘Peace’, with Sam Wells. Dinner in the hotel.

  4. GUBBIO

After breakfast, we drive for about an hour to Gubbio for a guided tour. Gubbio is a sizable town situated in the Perugia province of Umbria at the foot of Mount Ingino. There is a great deal of historical interest to discover; the Logge dei Tiratori, Church of San Francesco, Piazza Grande, Palazzo dei Consoli and we will see Palazzo del Podestà, the Cathedral and the Ducal Palace. Enjoy medieval alleyways and panoramic views. We return to Assisi where we will celebrate the Eucharist together at St Leonards and have our third address with Sam Wells, followed by dinner.

  5. TO SIENA

After breakfast, bid farewell to Assisi and drive to Siena. After we check in to our hotel, located within the ancient city walls of Siena, we will visit the Duomo in Siena and Duccio's Maesta. We enjoy dinner in a local restaurant.

  6. FLORENCE

After breakfast we drive from Siena to Florence for a full day guided walking guided tour, where we will visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria, one of the largest churches in the world. Then we continue to Piazza Santa Croce, Piazza della Signoria, Cortile degli Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza Santa Felicita, Piazza Pitti, Loggia del Porcellino, Orsanmichele, Quartiere di Dante Alighieri. As it is Sunday, we plan to attend a public Mass. After free time for lunch, we see the Giotto's Bell Tower, the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the Opera del Duomo Museum and the ancient basilica of Santa Reparata. Enjoy the scenes of Piazza del Duomo and immerse yourself in 726 years of history and beauty.

  7. HOMEWARD

After breakfast we will have morning prayer and our final address, ‘Peace be With You’ with Richard Carter. There will be somewhere to leave luggage until early afternoon when we join our coach for the transfer to Florence Airport. Our return flight will depart late afternoon and will arrive into London Gatwick Airport mid evening.

Please note the itinerary may be subject to change due to local conditions and flights can also be subject to alteration but are correct at the time of printing.

There will be some walking on this pilgrimage, these historic sights are best explored on foot. Please call the McCabe office for advice or speak to the tour leaders if you are at all concerned.
