Patmos and the Dodecanese Islands led by Canon Paul Miller

A three-island voyage — following the apostles John and Paul across the sacred blue waters of the Dodecanese

Welcome to this three-island voyage with a three-night stay on Patmos, uncovering rich layers of biblical and historical significance. Patmos is globally known for its religious legacy as the place where John the Evangelist wrote the Book of Revelation. In 1981 Greece declared it a "Sacred Island," and in 1999 UNESCO inscribed the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse as World Heritage Sites. Rhodes, held by the Order of St John from 1309 to 1523, enchants with its magnificent Gothic Old Town — the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Street of the Knights, and the cobbled alleys of a living medieval city. On its eastern shore lies beautiful Lindos, where St Paul preached in AD 58, while Kos — birthplace of Hippocrates and sacred land of Asclepius — completes the voyage. We include flights, accommodation close to the heart of the historic old towns, all excursions, daily breakfast and dinner, island ferry crossings, and much more — as well as generous time to enjoy the sparkling Aegean, local culture, and quiet contemplation.

Itinerary

  1. Travel to Rhodes

Fly from London to Rhodes. On arrival, meet your local guide and transfer to your hotel close to the walled heart of Rhodes Old Town for a three-night stay. With its medieval towers, cobbled lanes and warm Aegean light, Rhodes sets the scene beautifully for the journey ahead. Dinner at the hotel.

  2. Rhodes Old Town and the Knight’s Palace

A walking tour through the St John Gate into Rhodes Old Town, with its medieval buildings from the Byzantine Empire adorned by a maze of cobbled alleys. See the Holy Catholic Cathedral and visit the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of St John and the Statue of Diagoras. In the afternoon, visit the Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus, the Acropolis of Rhodes and the magnificent Olympic Stadium. Dinner at the
    hotel.

  3. Tsambika Monastery & Lindos

We drive to Tsambika Monastery, set on a hill 300 metres above sea level, with its miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary said to have moved location of its own accord. Continue for views of Feraklos Castle, standing where an ancient Acropolis once stood. In the afternoon, visit beautiful Lindos — whitewashed houses, pebble-paved courtyards, an ancient theatre carved from rock, and the Doric sanctuary of Athena Lindia. St Paul preached here in AD 58 and the bay is said to be where he landed. Dinner in a local taverna by the port.

  4. Ferry to the Holy Island of Patmos

Board the ferry and sail through the Dodecanese, calling at island ports en route and enjoying the scenery of this extraordinary archipelago. In the afternoon, arrive at Patmos's main port and town of Skala. In 1981 Greece declared Patmos a "Sacred Island", and in 1999 UNESCO inscribed the Monastery of St John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse as World Heritage Sites. Skala is your home for the next three nights. Dinner in a local taverna.

  5. In the Footsteps of St John

We drive to the Cave of the Apocalypse (UNESCO World Heritage Site), where St John received his vision. Seven silver lamps hang in the cave, the largest above the very place where St John slept — using a rock as a pillow, which still remains. We continue up to the Monastery of St John the Theologian, set like a crown on top of the settlement of Chora, the island's most iconic landmark. Dinner in a local taverna.

  6. Discovering Patmos

Follow your guide on a gentle stride through the northern part of this holy island, starting in Skala and the nearby village of Campos. Visit lesser-known churches off the beaten track, meet the locals, and sample the olive oil, honey and herbs for which Patmos is celebrated. This unhurried day captures the quiet, contemplative spirit that makes the island so special. Dinner in a local taverna

  7. Ferry to Kos

A late morning departure by ferry to Kos with some services calling at Leros and Kalymnos — giving further glimpses of unspoilt Dodecanese scenery. Kos is the third-largest of the Dodecanese Islands and the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. Transfer to your hotel close to Kos Old Town for a two-night stay. Time to stroll or relax before dinner at the hotel.

  8. Historical Kos

A walking tour of Kos Old Town, where history is imprinted on every façade — a harmonious intermingling of past and present. Visit the Castle of the Knights of St John, the commandery, the ancient Tree of Hippocrates (under which he is said to have taught), the Roman Mansion and the lively Eleftherias Square. The afternoon is at leisure to explore the shops, cafés and waterfront at your own pace. Dinner at the hotel.

  9. Home

A relaxed morning at leisure with time to visit any remaining sights, browse the market or simply enjoy a final coffee by the harbour. In the afternoon, transfer to Kos Airport for your direct flight back to London, carrying with you memories of three extraordinary islands.

Dress is cool and casual throughout your time in Greece. You may wish to take one or two smarter items for the evenings.
