Jeel Al Amal Scholarship Fund
Inspired and created by Revd Alison Askew, the Jeel Scholarship Fund (JSF) is a new initiative providing further education grants to school leavers at Jeel al Amal, one of our core MET supported projects. Jeel is a Christian organisation that does tremendous work caring for young people regardless of their religion. The boarding section is only for boys, but girls attend the school. Children come from families who, for multiple reasons, are unable to care for them. Until Alison’s initiative, further education was not an option, simply through lack of funds.
How are students selected?
Jeel’s director, Najwah Sahhar, selects suitable candidates considering academic ability, psychological resilience to live and thrive in an unfamiliar environment, and determination to pursue a particular course of study with a clear goal in mind. Najwah liaises with the colleges and universities and manages fee payments and student support.
The JSF Committee in the UK raises funds and MET manages and audits the fund ensuring transparency.
The first Jeel pupils to benefit
In 2020 our first student began a four year nursing degree at Al Quds University and this year two more students were awarded funding – one is reading medicine at the Arab American University in Jenin and the other Nursing at Bethlehem University. We hope these will be the first students of many to benefit from this new fund.
How you can help
Typical annual fees per student range from £4-8,000 and the ambition is to offer funding to all suitable candidates. The committee have raised £30,000 to get the project off the ground – and you can help make a dream come true for more Jeel school leavers.
To donate to the Jeel Scholarship Fund, please gift through MET in the usual way (see back page) and specify for JSF.
