The work of the Trust

The McCabe Educational Trust supports selected projects on a regular basis. Each month we send a guaranteed amount to each organisation as our contribution to basic running costs. In addition we fund capital projects wherever possible. 

The McCabe Educational Trust makes no deductions for administration
as all costs are covered by the office of McCabe Pilgrimages.

Lazarus Home for Girls 
Our number one priority is to see the completion of the new Lazarus Home for Girls in Bethany. Samar and forty girls under her wing are waiting to move from cramped rented accommodation to a new purpose-built home. Last year The McCabe Educational Trust and McCabe Pilgrimages contributed £100,000 to the project. Our target is to raise a further £200,000 before the end of next year. The shell of the building is now complete and the interior fitting will begin shortly.

Jeel Al Amal Home for Boys 
Jeel al Amal is situated next door to the Lazarus girls home. Each month we send a remittance to help pay for basic running costs and we also make grants available for capital projects. This year we have paid for much needed new bathroom facilities. Each July, we co-operate with Unipal to run a Summer School for the boys. Volunteers are amazed at what the staff achieve with minimal resources. Pilgrim groups are encouraged to visit Jeel and to become partners in our investment in this home and school.

 

O Little town of Bethlehem

McCabe pilgrims visit the Church of the Nativity and the Shepherds Fields but for many the highlight is a visit to one of the Trust’s partner projects.

Al Shurooq Blind School
Last month we were privileged to visit the brand new premises of this unique residential school in Bethlehem. Five years of planning, fundraising and building work have finally come to fruition. All the furnishings on the top floor were provided by supporters of the McCabe Educational Trust as well as state-of-the-art laundry facilities.

Doris Shehadeh, the Director tells us that the new school will cost £8,000 per month to run. The only regular money they receive is from our Trust. All other donations are ad hoc and irregular, making budgeting difficult. This new building was funded by public donations and funds are still needed to complete the project. For instance, there is a lift shaft, but no lift!

Music Therapy
This is a new and innovative programme being funded jointly by the McCabe Educational Trust and the Diocese of Rochester. Our local partner is the SOS village in Bethlehem. To date over £30,000 has been raised. Claire Tillotson, a Music Therapist from Bromley, is visiting regularly and passing on her skills to social workers, psychiatrists and psychologists in the Bethlehem area. They will then be able to use Music Therapy in their treatment of some highly traumatised children.

The latest development is that a local student has been selected for training in London. We will fund his studies. At the end of his two year course, he will return to Bethlehem, qualified to continue the work that Claire has started.

 

McCabe in India

The McCabe Educational Trust is proud to be a partner in the work of the Revd Andrew McCabe MBE who has spent his life in India serving the poor and needy.

Anand Niwas Boys Home 
The James Harvey Memorial School near Lucknow in North India has been Andrew McCabe’s base for more than forty years. Attached to the school is the Anand Niwas home where approximately two hundred needy boys are accommodated. Andrew McCabe takes responsibility for raising the funding of the home.

The McCabe Educational Trust has undertaken the support of a quarter of the budget and it is our ambition, funds permitting, to increase this to half.

A clinic for the Tharu tribe 
Charlotte Baptist Chapel in Edinburgh provided £26,000 initial funding for this initiative of Andrew’s to mark the chapel’s bi-centenary and also the McCabe family’s long association with the chapel.

A new clinic and healthcare project is being created among the Tharu tribe in a remote jungle area of North East Bihar – an area Andrew has been working in for more than fifty years. The McCabe Educational Trust is co-ordinating the funding. Work has now started on building the infrastructure and recruiting staff.
