Difficult times for Jeel al Amal

We really miss all our friends and the visiting groups!  I pray you all keep safe and that all this will be over soon.

Coronavirus cases are rising every day.  Jerusalem is under lockdown.  Bethany is a neglected area and things got out of hand.

At Jeel the children come into school to study twice a week; then they rotate with another group and continue the rest of the days online via Zoom.  We keep social distancing, which has been especially difficult for the little ones.  But the school is going on.  We are glad that up until now we have kept everybody safe; we take the temperature of all the children as they arrive for school and keep the hygiene rules.  The 60 children in the boarding section are also doing fine.

On the financial level, things are very difficult as we used to depend on visiting groups to donate.  So we are in debt; bills are mounting up in addition to the salaries, which we have only been able to pay half.  You know we do not give high salaries so things are very tough and everybody is getting resentful, which is putting extra stress on us.  We know that people around the world are also struggling, as many have lost their jobs, and this is reflecting itself big time on Jeel al Amal.  Friends that used to help are now stopping.  We are so glad for the MET’s quarterly remittance – that really sustains the home.

Greetings and blessings to all,

Najwa Sahhar-Sayegh
