Serbia, Bosnia & Croatia

Sacred Encounters: Serbia, Bosnia & Croatia

Following Orthodox saints, mountain monasteries and centuries of prayer across three nations where Christianity has endured through every turn of history.

From the Orthodox heart of Serbia to the Adriatic shore of Croatia, this ten-day journey crosses three countries where the Christian East and West meet — and where faith has been tested, divided, and again reconciled.

We begin in Belgrade among the great churches and monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church, then wander the painted sanctuaries of Fruška Gora before riding a scenic mountain railway into Bosnia. In Sarajevo, a mosque, cathedral, church and synagogue stand within a few streets of one another; at the Tunnel of Hope we pause to remember and to pray.

On to Mostar's rebuilt bridge, the Marian quiet of Međugorje, and finally the marble streets of walled Dubrovnik — where, at journey's end, the group gathers to reflect on all that has been seen and shared, across cultures and faiths.

Itinerary

  1. Arrival in Belgrade

Fly from London to Belgrade and transfer to your hotel for a three-night stay. A welcome meeting introduces Serbia's Orthodox heritage and traditions, before dinner at the hotel with a welcome drink and an opening reflection.

  2. Belgrade — Orthodox Faith & Urban Life

A city tour beginning at the soaring St Sava Church, third-largest Orthodox church in Europe, then along Knez Mihailova Street to the Kalemegdan fortress where the Sava meets the Danube. We visit the Monastery of St Mark and meet a representative of the local Orthodox community, with a coffee break this afternoon, before dinner along the lively Skadarlija Street.

  3. Novi Sad & the Fruška Gora Monasteries

North to Novi Sad for a walking tour of its Orthodox and Catholic cathedrals and elegant Dunavska Street. Into the wooded hills of Fruška Gora to the monasteries of Krušedol and Grgeteg, with time for quiet prayer and conversation with the monastic community, and an included lunch at a local family run restaurant. Dinner is at the hotel.

  4. Into the Highlands — Monasteries & Sirogojno

Through the river gorge of Ovčar Banja, where ancient monasteries cling to the hillsides and offer space for prayer. We continue to the open-air village of Sirogojno to meet local artisans and learn of traditional dress, food and rural faith, before arriving in the mountain resort of Zlatibor, where dinner is at the hotel.

  5. The Šargan Eight Railway & into Bosnia

A morning aboard the scenic Šargan Eight, a narrow-gauge railway that loops through tunnels and viaducts to Mokra Gora. Then across the border into Bosnia and on to Sarajevo, where the evening brings a Bosnian coffee tasting and a walk through the bazaar of Baščaršija — an introduction to a living tradition of hospitality. Dinner is at a local restaurant.

  6. Sarajevo — Interfaith Heritage

A profound day. We begin at the Tunnel of Hope, the lifeline dug beneath the 1993 siege, where Geoffrey leads a time of reflection. A walking tour gathers the city's faiths within a few streets — the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, the Sacred Heart Cathedral, an Orthodox church and the synagogue —
followed by a conversation on coexistence and reconciliation, and dinner with a local family.

  7. Sarajevo to Mostar

We travel to Mostar, the heart of Herzegovina, beginning straight away with a walking tour of its restored Old Town — the famous bridge arching the Neretva and the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque. A Sunday service is held during the day, and the evening brings dinner at a local restaurant and a walk through the lamplit streets, where we stay overnight.

  8. Međugorje — Pilgrimage & Reflection

A morning at Međugorje, among the most visited Marian sites in the world, with unhurried time for personal prayer and reflection, before returning to Mostar for the evening and dinner at a local restaurant.

  9. Mostar to Dubrovnik

An early departure for the Adriatic and the walled city of Dubrovnik. A guided walk through its old town and free time along the ramparts give way to a closing reflection together — gathering the insights of a journey made across cultures and faiths. A farewell drink is shared over dinner.

  10. Homeward

After breakfast, transfer to Dubrovnik airport for the return flight to London. As the London arrival airport may differ from your departure airport, an onward transfer to your original airport is included.
