PRIVATE GROUP Walking the Camino to Santiago for Nicky

Walking the Camino to Santiago for Nicky

Raising funds for MND research

2 - 7 October 2024

Travel the Camino Frances from Leon to Santiago de Compostela.

Walk together on four days covering some scenic sections of the route and with options of short walks of around 5Km or longer walks of up to 20Km, each walk accompanied by a Camino walking guide.

At our final destination we will enjoy some relaxation with time to explore the Old Town - designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and see the famous Cathedral.

Two local Camino guides will join us to add commentary along the way.

A pilgrimage is a spiritual adventure, where the journey itself is as important as the destination.

Each day as we walk, we will pray and reflect on scripture and other writings; and as we walk, talk, eat and drink together our hope is that the journey will refresh and renew us.

Buen Camino!

Itinerary

  1. Travel to León, Spain

An 09:35 check in for departure from Gatwick Airport on Vueling flight VY6626 to Asturias departing at 12:05, arriving at 15:05. We drive to León for dinner and overnight stay.

After breakfast there will be a guided visit of León until noon. Drive to Astorga for a short visit and time for lunch. Transfer to Cruz de Ferro for a 17km walk to Molinaseca. The short 5km walk will begin at Riego de Ambros. As soon as everyone has arrived at Molinaseca, drive to Ponferrada for dinner and stay.

  3. Ponferrada to Samos

Breakfast will be followed by a short visit of Ponferrada. Drive to Villafranca to visit the Church. Drive to Cebreiro for a short visit and free time for lunch. After lunch transfer to Triacastela and take a 10Km walk to the Monastery in Samos. The shorter walk is from Renche to Samos for 5km. When everyone has arrived in Samos, drive to Sarria for dinner and overnight.

  4. Sarria to Arzua

Following breakfast, drive from Sarria to the lively market town of Melide and walk 15km from here to Arzua. The shorter walk is 6km from Fraga to Arzua. Dinner and overnight in Arzua—a town famous for its cheese.

Breakfast is followed by a drive to Arca. Walk the last 20km from here to the Santiago. The short walk is 6km from San Marcis. We leave behind the countryside as we walk into Santiago de Compostela. After recovering from walking, take time to explore this gem of a city. There will be free time for lunch and then we have a guided tour of Santiago Old Town and visit the Cathedral which has a Baroque façade hiding the much earlier Romanesque building and set on the site where in the 8th century the tomb of St James was discovered. We join Pilgrim Mass at 19:30 where we have arranged for the Botafumeiro to be swung.
In the evening we enjoy a farewell dinner in a local restaurant, featuring the traditional ‘Quiemada’ drink ceremony. Overnight in Santiago

Travel Insurance

This is essential. We require all travellers to have adequate cancellation and medical coverage for their journey. We recommend the policy with Holiday Extras who offer a comprehensive policy as well as yearly policies that also cover short UK overnight stays. See the back cover of the brochure for details.

Airline

We fly on Vueling scheduled flights from London Gatwick Airport direct to Asturias and return from Santiago. Checked baggage of 23kgs, airport and security taxes are included.

Hotels

We stay each night in a well appointed hotel. The tour is on a half-board basis with breakfast and evening meal included daily. We  have selected two and three star hotels so that you can expect comfortable, clean accommodation and rooms with private facilities. Our chosen hotels are well tried-and-tested by past McCabe pilgrims and have been selected based on their location or facilities and quality of food and service.

Touring information

We will be accompanied by our walking guides who will look after the walk logistics and the formalities of hotel check-ins, etc.

Days generally start at 9 and finish around 6 with dinner served around 8. Lunches are not included as we like to keep flexibility of each day’s timings, but our guides are expert at recommending options each day.

At your destination we join in a pilgrim Mass in the cathedral of St James, where the great Botafumeiro is usually swung.  Our final celebratory dinner includes the traditional end of pilgrimage “Quiemada” experience.

Our Walks

Our walks along The Way will vary in length and degree of difficulty but they have been planned with the expectation that most people will be able to participate. There will always be a shorter walk and coaching option for non-walkers.

Walking equipment is required. Think in terms of stout walking shoes and a day pack to carry water, a camera and the like.

Practical information

Passports, visas and health

Check that your passport is valid beyond the return date of this tour.  If you need a new passport apply early as there can be considerable backlogs at the passport offices.  There are minimal formalities for British passport holders entering Spain.  If you are holding a non-British passport, or require further advice, please consult the McCabe office.  No inoculations are required. We do, however, advise you to consult your doctor regarding your own personal requirements.

Travelling Alone

A limited number of single rooms are available at a supplementary cost of £219. For single travellers who do require single accommodation this should be requested when making a booking. If you would like to share a twin room with someone else please do let us know at the time of booking.

The McCabe Educational Trust

The McCabe Educational Trust is an independent registered charity with the aim of helping inspiring people we meet on pilgrimage in the Holy Land. McCabe Pilgrimages invite all travellers to become partners in this work. A £20 voluntary donation to the Trust’s work is added to every pilgrim’s invoice and all money raised in this way is given in full to the projects the Trust supports. This scheme is voluntary and confidential with nobody put under any pressure to participate.

Full Financial Security

All money paid to McCabe is fully secure. Holidays including flights are covered by our ATOL license from the Civil Aviation Authority, and holidays without flights are protected by our membership of the ABTOT bonding scheme.  If a pilgrimage is cancelled, for instance through lack of numbers or for political considerations, McCabe will promptly refund all monies paid.

AITO Quality Statement

McCabe Pilgrimages is a member of the Association of Independent Tour Operators. The Association represents Britain’s leading independent tour operators and encourages high standards of quality and service. McCabe abides by the Association’s Code of Conduct and adheres to the AITO Quality Charter.
