Long before the Reformation, Norway was a land of pilgrims. From Oslo and from the western fjords they walked north to Nidaros, to the shrine of St Olav — a road as travelled in medieval Europe as those to Rome or Compostela.
This Legacy pilgrimage follows that road by rail, road and water: from the merchants’ wharves of Bergen, through the Nærøyfjord and over the highlands to Oslo, then north on the Dovre Railway to Trondheim and the great cathedral raised above the saint’s tomb.
Along the way, stave churches and medieval cathedrals, a pilgrim passport stamped at the Oslo Pilgrim Centre — and, on 17 May, a whole nation in celebration.
May is the finest month to make this journey. The fjords are green to the waterline while snow still lies on the high passes, and the northern light stretches the evenings long past dinner — time enough, after each day, to sit and watch the water.
The group is small, the pace unhurried, and every hotel stands within walking distance of the old town it serves. This is a pilgrimage made by train and boat rather than by coach — and the travelling is not the part you endure, but a good deal of the point.
