Towards the end of the Thirty Years War in central Europe, there was an outbreak of the plague in Bavaria. The elders of the village of Oberammergau in an effort to protect their village, decided to seal it off from outside contact. But an itinerant worker returned, bringing the plague with him and it swept through the village.

So the people solemnly vowed that, if God would show His compassion and lift the scourge, every ten years they would enact the Passion of our Lord. The plague left the village in 1633 and, as a perpetual thanksgiving and re-affirmation of faith, the villagers of Oberammergau have performed the Passion Play at regular intervals ever since

We will have our own staff in the village helping you to make the very most from your time. Everybody is involved in some capacity, and you will be impressed at how smoothly the villagers cope with so many visitors.

Afternoon arrival in Oberammergau and check-in to your accommodation for a two night stay.

A 3-course dinner at your accommodation is included.

The Passion Play

Morning free to explore the village.

A light lunch is included.

Afternoon and evening attend the Passion Play with dinner during the interval.

Morning in Oberammergau

Breakfast in your accommodation and check out by 11:00.

Your accommodation may store you luggage so you can spend some time in the village to do any final shopping.

Visiting Oberammergau

Your holiday includes two nights in Oberammergau, arriving in the village the afternoon before the performance.

Dinner is included on arrival, and the following morning is free to explore the village before the afternoon and evening performance.

Your holiday price includes a top grade Passion Play ticket.

Single Travellers

A limited number of single rooms are available and we will try and accommodate single room requests.

Travel Insurance

We recommend that you purchase travel insurance. Then you will be able to claim a refund, if for instance you cancel for unforeseen medical reasons. All travellers must be insured with a policy including pandemic cover.

A note about Austrian twin beds

The distinction between double bedded and twin bedded rooms in Oberammergau is sometimes not clear. A traditional twin-bedded room consists of one bed frame with two separate mattresses and separate duvets.

Financial Security

McCabe holidays give full financial protection to the traveller. Holidays including flights are financially protected by the Civil Aviation authority. The McCabe ATOL number is 2920. Any holidays not including flights are also financially protected by McCabe’s membership of the ABTOT bonding scheme.

Oberammergau Passion Play prices explained

Our breaks include two night’s accommodation in Oberammergau and a Grade One ticket for a performance of the Passion Play. We have selected Grade C accommodation and most of our guests will be accommodated in guest houses within walking distance of the theatre.

In order to manage the limited resources of the village effectively, the Passion Play committee provide a package including allocated accommodation, restaurant and play ticket. Other extras included are the local bus service and a textbook for the performance.

Booking Conditions

The McCabe Oberammergau programme was published in August 2020 for holidays during the year 2022. An Oberammergau booking form with a summary of booking conditions was published at the same time.
