Embark on a memorable pilgrimage through North Macedonia and Albania - two remarkable countries rich in Christian heritage, dramatic landscapes and cultural depth. Our journey begins in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia and birthplace of Mother Teresa, where we explore the city’s religious and historic sites, including peaceful monasteries and the vibrant Old Bazaar. We continue to Kriva Palanka, home to the revered Osogovo Monastery, before travelling to the stunning lakeside city of Ohrid. Crossing into Albania, we visit the tranquil St. Naum Monastery, set on the shores of Lake Ohrid, and continue to Korçë, a city known for its Orthodox traditions, elegant architecture and cultural energy. From there, we explore the historic village of Voskopoje, once a flourishing centre of Christian learning and art, where several medieval churches still stand. The tour  then leads us to Tirana, Albania’s dynamic capital and on to Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its hilltop castle, painted churches, and iconic Ottoman-era architecture. With inspiring sites, expert local guidance and time for prayer, reflection and fellowship, this is a journey designed to illuminate both the historical and spiritual stories of the Balkans - leaving you with lasting memories and a deeper connection to the region’s sacred legacy

Itinerary

  1. Arrive in Skopje; transfer to your hotel

    We fly from London to Skopje and meet our tour leader. Transfer to our hotel and on arrival have a welcome drink and dinner.

  2. In Skopje; visit St. George Monastery

    This morning we travel just outside the city to visit the Monastery of St. George, nestled in a peaceful hillside setting near Skopje. Dating back to the 12th century, the monastery is known for its serene atmosphere and beautifully preserved frescoes, offering a quiet space for prayer and reflection. We return to Skopje for a guided walking tour of the city, the vibrant capital of North Macedonia and birthplace of Mother Teresa. We will visit the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, located near the site of her childhood home and reflect on her enduring legacy of compassion. Our walk continues to the historic Skopje Fortress, with views overlooking the city, and through the atmospheric streets of the Old Bazaar.

  3. In Skopje; visit Kriva Palanka

    After breakfast, we depart for Kriva Palanka, a charming town in the northeast of North Macedonia. Here we visit the magnificent Osogovo Monastery, dedicated to St. Joachim of Osogovo. Set against a backdrop of forested hills, this serene 12th century monastery is a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture and a revered site of pilgrimage. We’ll take time to explore its ornate frescoes, peaceful courtyards and tranquil setting. Following our visit and time for reflection, we return to Skopje, where we visit the city’s notable medieval landmarks, offering insight into the region’s historical and cultural legacy. The rest of the evening is free.

  4. In Skopje; drive to Ohrid

    After breakfast, we set off for the historic city of Bitola. Along the way, we stop at the renowned Tikveš Winery, one of the oldest and most celebrated wine producers in the Balkans. Here, we’ll enjoy a guided wine tasting experience, sampling a selection of local vintages and learning about the region’s rich winemaking tradition. After a leisurely lunch, we continue our journey westward, arriving in the beautiful lakeside city of Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most spiritually and historically significant places in the country. On arrival, we check into our hotel for the evening.

  5. In Ohrid; walking tour

    After breakfast, we begin our visit to the beautiful city of Ohrid, often referred to as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans” for its remarkable collection of churches. Our walk takes us through the old town’s cobbled streets, past traditional houses and to key landmarks such as St. Sophia Church and the stunning hilltop church of St. John at Kaneo, perched above the city with breathtaking views. In the evening, we take to the water for a boat tour on Lake Ohrid, offering a new perspective on the city and its stunning surroundings. Overnight in Ohrid

  6. Drive to Korçë

    After breakfast, we depart from Ohrid and enjoy a scenic drive along the lake’s edge to visit St. Naum Monastery, set on a clifftop above Lake Ohrid. This 10th century monastery is dedicated to St. Naum, a disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Surrounded by lush greenery and natural springs, it offers both spiritual depth and beautiful views. After time to explore the church and grounds, we cross the border into Albania and continue our journey to the vibrant city of Korçë. Dinner and overnight in Korçë.

  7. Visit Voskopoje

    After breakfast, we travel to Voskopoje, a picturesque village near Korçë once known as a major centre of Orthodox culture. We’ll explore a few of its beautiful medieval Orthodox churches, famous for their frescoes and history. Enjoy the peaceful mountain setting before returning to Korçë in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight in Korçë.

  8. Drive to Tirana

    After breakfast, we head to Tirana, the vibrant capital city of Albania. On arrival this afternoon, we set out on foot to explore the vibrant city, beginning at Skanderbeg Square, the central hub of Albanian public life. Our guided walking tour takes us past key landmarks including Tirana City Hall, the Statue of Skanderbeg and the Ethem Bey Mosque, a beautifully restored 18th century mosque that survived Albania’s communist era as a symbol of quiet resilience. Nearby, we see the historic Clock Tower, the National Library, the Opera House, and the striking mosaic “The Albanians” that adorns the entrance of the National Historical Museum. As we walk along the grand Italian Boulevard, we take in views of the National Art Gallery and elegant buildings from the Italian architectural period. The rest of the evening is free to relax or explore the city at your own pace.

  9. Visit Berat

    Today we have a full-day excursion to Berat, one of Albania’s oldest and most picturesque towns, known as the “City of a thousand windows”. Explore the UNESCO-listed old town, including Mangalem and Gorica quarters. Visit the ancient Berat Castle which is still inhabited today, we’ll see the main
    gates, towers and discover its orthodox churches and typical residential architecture. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before returning to Tirana.

  10. Depart Home

    After breakfast at the hotel, we will head off to the airport, for our flight back to London.

Essential Information

The cost for this 10 day tour is £2,490 per person.

The cost is based on sharing a double or twin-bedded room and includes all excursions and most expenses. A number of single rooms are available for a supplement of £400.

A £500 per person non-refundable deposit is payable on confirmation. After which, an instalment payment amounting to 50% of the total cost of your trip is due 26 weeks prior to departure with the final balance due twelve weeks prior to departure.

Late Bookings

Please note that for bookings made within 12 weeks of departure, the price may increase due to the fluctuating cost of flights. If this arises, we will always discuss this with you before processing your booking.

These will be emailed to you two weeks before departure.

Any special requirements, such as dietary needs, mobility requests, and any other requests should be noted at the time of booking.

PASSPORTS, VISAS AND HEALTH

Please ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the end of this pilgrimage. If you need a new passport apply early as there can be considerable backlogs at the passport offices. Visas are not required for British or other EEC passport holders. No inoculations are required. We do, however, advise you to consult your doctor regarding your own personal requirements.

Travel insurance

Mobility

Many of our tours and excursions are designed for those who are able to travel independently, or with the support of a companion who can assist during the trip. We recommend that participants feel comfortable with physical activity and are able to manage longer travel days, which may include early starts and extended periods on the road. Please note that the quality of vehicles and roads may vary from what you’re accustomed to in the UK. McCabe Pilgrimages invite all travellers to become partners in this work. A £20 voluntary donation to the Trust’s work is added to every pilgrim’s invoice and all money raised in this way is given in full to the projects the Trust supports. This scheme is voluntary and confidential with nobody put under any pressure to participate.
