Greece

First Steps with St Paul

The essential St Paul — a concentrated introduction to the Apostle’s Greece, from Philippi to Corinth in a single rewarding week.

This eight-day pilgrimage visits the essential places of St Paul’s story in Greece. Beginning where he first set foot in Europe at Neapolis, we visit Philippi and Lydia’s stream, the Roman city of Thessalonica, and Berea — before travelling south to Corinth, the city whose church drew from Paul some of his most searching writing, and ending with a day of reflection in Athens, where Paul preached to the philosophers.

Led by the Revd Dr Peter Walker, teaching opens the Scriptures simply and vividly at the sites themselves — a Renewal of Baptismal Vows by Lydia’s stream, Holy Communion amid the ruins of Corinth, and reflection on the Areopagus where Paul preached to Athens. With just three hotel bases across the week, there is time to settle, reflect and pray at each place.

Itinerary

  1. Arrival in Greece

We fly from London to Thessaloniki, where we are met by our English-speaking local guide and transfer by coach to the harbour city of Kavala. Flight times permitting, we gather this evening for dinner at our hotel, on the threshold of Paul’s first steps onto European soil.
  2. Philippi & the Via Egnatia

After morning teaching on Paul’s Second Missionary Journey (Acts 16–17), we visit Lydia’s Baptistery — with time for reflection or a Renewal of Baptismal Vows — then the great site of Philippi. In the afternoon we walk the ancient Via Egnatia down into Kavala, biblical Neapolis (Acts 16:11), pausing at the harbour and the mural of St Paul. Dinner at our hotel in Kavala.
  3. Thessalonica

We drive to Thessaloniki, pausing at the Lion of Amphipolis, and explore the Roman Forum and the Church of St Demetrius. A panorama from the upper city and a short tour take in the Arch of Galerius, the Rotunda and the White Tower, with an optional museum visit, before we continue to Veria. Dinner at our hotel.

  4. Berea & Edessa

A morning lecture precedes a walking tour of Veria — ancient Berea (Acts 17), where Paul found ‘noble’ hearers — visiting the Bema and synagogue. We then drive to Edessa for its celebrated waterfalls and the bridge of the old Via Egnatia, returning to Veria after an early dinner at a restaurant near the falls.

  5. South to Corinth

A full day’s scenic coach journey carries us south through the heart of Greece, with teaching en route on the letters associated with Paul’s ministry in this period — 1 Thessalonians and 1 Corinthians. We pause at the dramatic Corinth Canal before reaching our beach-front hotel near ancient Corinth, where we have dinner and reflect on our final days — as evening falls, the Saronic Gulf glimmers just beyond the terrace, the same waters Paul once sailed.

  6. Corinth & Cenchrea

We spend the morning at ancient Corinth, including the Erastus pavement, with time and space for Holy Communion. In the afternoon we visit Cenchrea, the harbour from which Paul sailed (Acts 18:18), with an optional short walk nearby. Dinner at our hotel.

  7. A Day of Reflection

Our morning is given to teaching and shared reflection on Paul’s masterpiece, the Letter to the Romans, written from Corinth in the winter of AD 57. The afternoon is free for rest, with optional excursions to Acrocorinth, Isthmia or a local hike. Farewell dinner at our hotel.

  8. Athens & Home

An early start brings us to Athens to ascend the Acropolis and stand on the Areopagus (Mars Hill, Acts 17), where Paul addressed the Athenian philosophers, with views over the city and the ancient Agora. After free time in the Plaka (time permitting), we transfer for our evening flight home to London.
