Malta & Gozo

Faith and Fellowship in Malta & Gozo

A pilgrimage in the gentle warmth of early spring to the islands of Malta and Gozo — walking in the footsteps of St Paul and discovering a faith that has endured since the apostle himself was shipwrecked on these shores.

Malta is one of the oldest Christian nations on earth. When St Paul was shipwrecked here in AD 60, he spent three months on the island, healing the sick and proclaiming the Gospel — and the Maltese have been keeping the faith ever since. This pilgrimage traces that extraordinary story across the islands of Malta and Gozo, taking in ancient temples, Baroque cathedrals, the walled city of Mdina, and the shimmering blue waters of St Paul's Bay.

Over eight days we explore the very best of these remarkable islands — from the golden-stoned grandeur of Valletta and the silent medieval streets of Mdina, to the ancient Ġgantija Temples on Gozo, the vivid fishing harbour of Marsaxlokk, and the spectacular Blue Grotto sea caves. Led by The Very Revd Andrew Nunn, this is a pilgrimage that combines extraordinary history with genuine warmth and fellowship.

Itinerary

  1. Monday — Fly to Malta

We fly from London to Malta, where we are met by our local guide and transferred to our home for the week — our hotel in Sliema, beautifully positioned on the seafront. We gather for a welcome drink and dinner at the hotel, followed by Compline to close the day.

  2. Tuesday — Treasures of Valletta

A day in Malta's magnificent capital. We begin with The Malta Experience, an introduction to the islands' remarkable history, before worshipping together at St Paul’sAnglican Pro-Cathedral. In the afternoon, we explore the breathtaking St John's Co-Cathedral with its gilded interior and Caravaggio masterpiece, and take in the sweeping panorama of the Grand Harbour from the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Dinner at the hotel, followed by Compline.

  3. Wednesday — Boat Trip to St Paul's Island

We begin at San Pawl Milqi in Burmarrad — by tradition the place where Publius welcomed the shipwrecked Apostle — pausing for prayers in the ancient chapel. We then take a private boat trip to St Paul's Island, site of the shipwreck itself (weather permitting). In Mosta we enjoy an included traditional Maltese lunch before visiting the great church and its celebrated Dome, where we worship together. Dinner this evening at a local restaurant, followed by Compline at the hotel.

  4. Thursday — A Taste of Gozo

We take the ferry across to the sister island of Gozo for a day of exploration. We visit the astonishing Ġgantija Temples — among the oldest free-standing structures on earth — and the church of St Paul at Marsalforn before exploring the ancient Citadel and the charming capital of Victoria. Free time for lunch before we return to Malta by ferry. Dinner at the hotel, followed by Compline.

  5. Friday — Rabat, Mdina & Wine Tasting

We begin in Rabat, visiting St Paul's Grotto — where the Apostle is said to have lived during his time on the island — and the early Christian catacombs. We then walk through the ancient gateway into Mdina, the silent city, for a guided tour and a visit to St Paul's Cathedral. The afternoon brings a highlight: an included wine tasting and light lunch at the Meridiana Wine Estate. Dinner this evening at the hotel, followed by Compline.

  6. Saturday — Marsaxlokk & the Blue Grotto

We travel south to Marsaxlokk Bay, a picturesque fishing village where traditional luzzu boats bob in vivid colours along the quayside. Time to browse the waterfront market and soak in the atmosphere. We continue to the spectacular Blue Grotto sea caves, before returning to the hotel for an afternoon lecture on St Paul by Maltese author Mark Gatt. Dinner at the hotel, followed by Compline.

  7. Sunday — Eucharist & the Three Cities

Our Sunday morning begins with the Eucharist at a local Anglican church. In the afternoon we travel south to explore Cottonera, the historic trio of fortified cities — Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea — built by the Knights of St John. Where weather allows, we take a traditional fregatina boat ride around the harbour. A farewell drink this evening before our final dinner together at a rooftop restaurant, followed by Compline.

  8. Monday — Fly Home

Today we transfer to Malta International Airport for our return flight to London, carrying with us cherished memories of these ancient, sun-warmed islands and the faith that has flourished here since St Paul first set foot on their shores.
