Jordan

A Pilgrimage through Holy Jordan

A pilgrimage through the land where Scripture comes alive — from the heights of Mount Nebo to the waters of Christ's baptism.

Few places gather so much of the biblical narrative into a single, welcoming kingdom. Here Moses gazed upon the Promised Land; here Elijah was taken up in the whirlwind; here, at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, the heavens opened over the Saviour at his baptism. To walk this land is to walk the pages of Scripture itself.

Yet Jordan is also a place of breathtaking beauty — the rose-red rock of Petra, the silent desert of Wadi Rum, the Roman grandeur of Jerash and the still waters of the Dead Sea. With daily worship led by your chaplain and a group of no more than twenty, this is an unhurried, prayerful journey in good company.

Itinerary

  1. Travel from London to Amman

We fly from London to Amman, arriving after midnight. We are met by our English-speaking local guide and transferred to our hotel in the heart of the capital, where dinner boxes await in our rooms — a warm welcome to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

  2. Amman & the Desert Castles

After breakfast and morning prayer we travel east into the desert to the Umayyad castles of Qasr Kharana and the exquisitely frescoed Qasr Amra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A lunch box is provided for lunch. We return to Amman for dinner at our hotel — with a welcome glass of local wine or beer — and an evening of prayer together

  3. Jerash & Umm Qais

We drive north, pausing at the Jabbok River where Jacob wrestled until daybreak, to the magnificent Greco-Roman city of Jerash, where lunch is taken in a local restaurant. In the afternoon we visit Umm Qais — ancient Gadara — gazing across to the Sea of Galilee, before returning to our hotel for dinner.

  4. Mount Nebo, Madaba & Petra

We ascend Mount Nebo, where Moses looked out upon the Promised Land, and celebrate Mass on its summit (subject to approval). At Madaba we marvel at the sixth-century mosaic map of the Holy Land and lunch in a local restaurant, before journeying south to the rose-red city of Petra and dinner at our hotel.

  5. The Rose City of Petra

A full day within the Nabataean wonder of Petra. From the main gate an optional horse ride carries us down to the mouth of the Siq, which we walk to the breathtaking Treasury, before the Royal Tombs, the great colonnaded street and, for the willing, the long ascent to the Monastery. Lunch is in a local restaurant, with dinner at our hotel.

  6. Petra & Little Petra

There is the chance for an optional second visit into Petra at your own pace. In the afternoon we discover Little Petra, the hidden Siq al-Barid, where caravans once rested along the ancient spice routes. Lunch is taken in a local restaurant and dinner at our hotel.

  7. Shobak & Wadi Rum

We gather for the Sunday Eucharist before the Crusader castle of Shobak crowns our morning, then descend into the vast desert of Wadi Rum, lunching in a local restaurant on the way. A 4x4 safari carries us among towering sandstone massifs and crimson dunes, and the day ends with dinner beneath a canopy of stars at a traditional Bedouin camp.

  8. Bethany Beyond the Jordan & the Dead Sea

At Bethany Beyond the Jordan, the very place of Christ's baptism, we renew our own baptismal promises beside the sacred river. We visit Elijah's Hill, then descend to the Dead Sea — the lowest point on earth — to float upon its waters at our shoreline hotel, where a late lunch and dinner are served.

  9. Amman & Salt

A morning tour of Amman takes in the Roman Theatre and the ancient Citadel. We continue to the historic town of Salt and the Holy Land Institute for the Deaf, where we meet the Revd Luay Haddad and share a homemade lunch with the community, before dinner at our hotel.

  10. Fly Home

Flight time permitting, we gather for a final morning prayer before transferring to Amman Airport for our return flight to London — carrying with us the prayers, landscapes and encounters of Holy Jordan.
