back to Jordan

5 Day Jordan Extension

Jordan is often the forgotten part of the Holy Land, but the stories are just as evocative as those in the Holy Land, with breaktaking landscapes and architecture to match.

Our recommended 5 day Jordan extension is perfect at the end of any Holy Land pilgrimage, with such sites as Mount Nebo, from where Moses viewed the Promised Land; the rose red city of Petra, one of the wonders of the Middle East, and Madaba, with its wonderful mosaics.

  1. Travel to Jordan

On a typical Holy Land Pilgrimage, groups will end their Holy Land itinerary at Tiberias and drive to the Sheikh Hussein border to cross into Jordan. A long drive today with a lunch break en route to Petra.

Two night stay at the Petra Guest House

  2. Iconic Petra building

    The Rose Red City

Petra's fame is well deserved and you will be struck by the scale of the site and the extraordinary beauty of the rock-cut tombs and temples. At the time of Jesus, Petra was a magnificent Nabatean city of enormous wealth, which controlled much of the trade that passed through the region.

We enter Petra through the Siq on foot and then suddenly stand before the rock-cut treasury, hewn out of the red sandstone. We spend the day here with time for visit many of the breathtaking monuments, including some of the Royal Tombs. We lunch in the Basin Restaurant, within the site of Petra. We then visit Ain Musa (Moses' Well) in Wadi Musa.

  3. Kerak Crusader Castle Holy Land Jordan

    Kerak Crusader Castle

Leaving Petra, we drive to Kerak Castle which we explore before lunch. This afternoon we continue to Amman and an Orientation tour before arriving at our hotel.

Two night stay at the Amman Regency Hotel

  4. Baptismal Site

This morning we visit Bethany beyond the Jordan, a wonderfully evocative site on the banks of the River Jordan and the site where John baptised Jesus. We continue to visit Mount Nebo, the mountain where Moses viewed the Promised Land. Then on to Madaba where we have lunch and view the mosaic map of the Middle East on the floor of the Church of St George, before returning to Amman.

  5. Holy Land Jordan Jarash

    Homeward Bound

We visit the spectacular Roman site of Jerash, the best preserved of all the Decapolis cities. We tour the ruins of the site including the oval forum, the colonnaded street and the theatre.

Lunch in Jerash, before driving back to the Sheikh Hussain Bridge, in to Israel, where we will be taken to Ben Gurion Airport. Our homeward easyJet flight EZY1828 departs at 20:30, arriving in Manchester at 00:10.

Practical information

Passports, visas and health

Passports should be valid for at least six months after the time of travel and a visa is issued free of charge to UK passport holders on entering Israel. There are currently no further requirements for entering the Palestinian territories. Non-British passport holders should consult the McCabe office as they may be required to apply in advance for a visa. No inoculations are essential but we advise travellers to consult their GP regarding personal requirements.

Travelling Alone

Many of our passengers travel alone and object to expensive single room supplements. McCabe Pilgrimages will accept individual bookings on a 'guaranteed share' basis. We charge the basic price and accommodate you with a person of the same sex also requesting shared accommodation. If we do not find someone to share with you, you will be accommodated in a single room at only 50% of the usual single room supplement. For single travellers who do require single accommodation this should be requested when booking and, if available, the normal supplement will be payable.

The McCabe Educational Trust

For many, meeting the ‘Living Stones’ of The Land becomes a real highlight of their pilgrimage. The McCabe Educational Trust is an independent registered charity with the aim of helping inspiring people we meet on pilgrimage. On your pilgrimage you will meet some of these people. As ‘the haves’ encounter the ‘have nots’ the Trust has become a practical tool for one to help the other.

McCabe Pilgrimages invite all travellers to become partners in this work. A £15 voluntary donation to the Trust’s work is added to every pilgrim’s invoice and all money raised in this way is given in full to the projects the Trust supports. This scheme is voluntary and confidential with nobody put under any pressure to participate.

Full Financial Security

All money paid to McCabe is fully secure. Holidays including flights are covered by our ATOL license from the Civil Aviation Authority, and holidays without flights are protected by our membership of the ABTOT bonding scheme. If a pilgrimage is cancelled, for instance through lack of numbers or for political considerations, McCabe will promptly refund all monies paid.
