Journey of the Holy Family – follow their footsteps in Egypt

A journey of peril and promise

The story of the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt is a journey of both danger and hope. After Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, King Herod sought to kill the child who was to be the Messiah. Warned in a dream, Joseph rose in the night to protect Mary and the Christ Child, leading them into Egypt – a land long regarded in Scripture as both a place of refuge and revelation.

Egypt: a land of refuge and fulfilment

Egypt’s role in salvation history is remarkable. From Abraham’s sojourn during famine to Joseph rising to power in Pharaoh’s court, and Moses leading God’s people in the Exodus, the land has always been a stage where God’s purposes are revealed. For the Holy Family, Egypt became a sanctuary, fulfilling the prophecy: “Out of Egypt I called my son” (Matthew 2:15).

Following their journey allows pilgrims to step into a story of faith, courage and trust – a young family carrying the hope of the world into unknown lands, guided by God’s hand.

Walking in the footsteps of the Holy Family

A pilgrimage to Egypt offers more than historical insight. Travelers can explore ancient routes believed to have been taken by Joseph, Mary, and Jesus, visit monasteries and churches that have preserved their memory, and experience the landscapes where the earliest Christians sought refuge. These sacred sites connect us directly to the story of God’s protection, guidance, and promise.

Visiting Egypt is to see how God works through both exile and homecoming, wilderness and shelter, shaping the unfolding drama of salvation.

Lessons of faith and courage

Like Joseph, we are called to discern God’s direction in uncertain times. Like Mary, we are reminded to treasure mysteries in our hearts. And like the infant Jesus, we see God’s presence in human vulnerability.

Even in flight, even in a foreign land, Emmanuel – God with us – remains. A pilgrimage to Egypt invites us to experience this presence first hand, and to carry its lessons home: that God is always faithful, guiding and redeeming our stories for His glory.
