Dear friend,
Inviting a group from your church to see the Oberammergau Passion Play in 2020 offers a unique experience for your church family to remember for years to come. This spectacular event, which takes place every ten years, gives you and your congregation an opportunity like no other to share in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
McCabe Travel has been taking church groups to this unique event since 1990. We know from feedback that this spectacular experience nurtures powerful stories across the church family, which are shared across all ages in the church and out to the local community and beyond.
We look forward to welcoming you
Alistair McCabe, Owner

"An experience not to miss. Such a privilege to visit and experience Oberammergau and sample the Passion Play. I hope to return with another group for them to experience the beauty, generous hospitality and spiritual uplift. McCabe’s team takes wonderful care before, during and after the tour experience. Nothing is any trouble and I always return time after time."
Doreen D, Co Antrim
"After 75 pilgrimages, my first experience with McCabe and certainly the best yet all round performance both in minute details and visionary planning with excellent communications and outcomes. A sheer delight and tremendous to have such personal staff support."
Revd. John R, Kent
"I’ve been to the Holy Land with McCabe and have met many clergy who’ve said they wouldn’t use anyone else. I’m following the same principle myself! I have booked a group to come to Oberammergau in 2020 with McCabe and can’t wait!"
Revd. Dawn J, Essex
We are offering one-week holidays combining a stay in Austria with one or two nights in Oberammergau village. We have top category performance tickets and all holidays include an excursion programme with a pilgrimage theme and opportunities for group worship. Here you can see some of the groups we already have set up and this is how a group tour appears on our website if you would like our support with online marketing.
During the 17th century, when the bubonic plague was sweeping Europe, the inhabitants of the small village of Oberammergau made a promise to God that if their village was spared, then they would perform a passion play every ten years. The first play was performed in 1634.
To be a part of the Passion Play, participants have to be born in Oberammergau or have lived there for at least 20 years. The cast was announced on 20 October 2018 and according to tradition by Ash Wednesday 2019 the male cast (apart from those playing Romans) will start growing their beards.
Originally the play was performed on a stage in the cemetery next to the parish church. Now with increasing numbers of people wanting to see performances, a large purpose-built theatre has been created, and today the theatre seats over 4,700 people. The stage is still in the open air with the Bavarian mountains as a back drop – stunning.
"It was an excellent experience. We visited so many places. The best experiences were where we were only amongst a handful of other visitors. It was amazing to think we were where Jesus had lived and walked."
