Al Shurooq School for the Blind in Bethlehem is having a challenging academic year
Al Shurooq School is a rare school in the West Bank for adopting holistic care as one of its major strategies in working with visually impaired children from ages 3 to 11. In addition to rehabilitation (occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy and orientation and mobility) psychosocial intervention is also provided to their families. This plays a major role in fulfilling the Al-Shurooq vision, which is to help our visually impaired children to be active members of the Palestinian community when they grow up. This is achieved by our partnership with local Palestinian communities and international organizations.
This whole educational process has been much affected in these difficult Covid-19 days. We have been forced to work to the emergency plan the school developed according to the protocols of the Ministries of Health and Education, drawn up to prevent the virus spreading. This has meant children could not attend the school in the usual way; they have been integrated, where appropriate, into mainstream schools, with support being given through attending weekly workshops together with their parents at Al Shurooq. This has given parents training to take more responsibility for their children’s education and has helped the children begin to interact with the real world. Where day school has not been appropriate, educational support packages, individually prepared, are given to parents at each of the weekly sessions.
With the support of our friends around the world we are trying to cope with the huge burden which all this has put on Al-Shurooq’s budget so that assistive devices that a visually impaired child needs for his/her education can be provided in three places (Al-Shurooq, the child’s home and the mainstream school).
Thank you all for all your effort to support us; through this support our children get access to the same education as other children.
