back to The Holy Land

The Holy Land

Friends & Supporters Holy Land Sponsored Walk

This bi-annual event has become central to the McCabe Pilgrimages calendar. An opportunity for supporters of the McCabe Educational Trust to travel together and see first-hand the work we support in the Holy Land.

We have space for up to one hundred participants, all of whom commit to raising funds for projects supported by MET. All monies raised will be distributed among projects supported by the McCabe Educational Trust.

Our previous sponsored walks have been a huge success, thanks to the dedication of our loyal supporters. In 2016 over £57,000 was raised directly from sponsorships, and helped us provide over £250,000 of grants to supported projects throughout the year!

Participation

Participants will include McCabe Pilgrimages staff, MET trustees, regular travellers and Trust supporters. This is the ideal opportunity, if you have not travelled with McCabe before, to come and see what we do. We will give a warm welcome to travellers coming on their own.

Location

Our 4th Sponsored Walk is multi location, beginning in Jerusalem, followed by a desert walk, a Galilee trail, and ending in the Huleh Valley nature reserve. Participants of all abilities will be accommodated with the emphasis, as always, on fellowship.

Fundraising

All monies raised will be distributed among projects supported by the McCabe Educational Trust. Fundraiser can choose to raise funds specifically for a favoured project or allow our trustees to allocate funds according to need.

There are currently no further requirements for entering the Palestinian territories. Non-British passport holders should consult the McCabe office as they may be required to apply in advance for a visa. No inoculations are essential but we advise travellers to consult their GP regarding personal requirements.

Travel Insurance

The McCabe recommended insurance policy is designed for the older traveller. The premium for a Holy Land pilgrimage is £59. Travellers over 75 pay a 50% supplement and we also recommend that older travellers obtain a note from their doctor stating that they are fit to travel. Do feel free to shop around. There are very many insurance options including annual policies. We do insist that all travellers take out medical insurance.

A key feature of our recommended policy is that there is no requirement to call a Medical Help Line as most pre-existing conditions are covered.

Hotels

We stay in our favourite hotels. Jerusalem’s Golden Walls Hotel overlooks the Old City walls and is within walking distance of the Holy Sepulchre. The Tiberias Ron Beach Hotel has a wonderful location right on the lakeside. Both are family owned and have been looking after McCabe guests for more than thirty years.

Travelling Alone

Many of our passengers travel alone and object to expensive single room supplements. McCabe Pilgrimages will accept individual bookings on a 'guaranteed share' basis. We charge the basic price and accommodate you with a person of the same sex also requesting shared accommodation. If we do not find someone to share with you, you will be accommodated in a single room at only 50% of the usual single room supplement. For single travellers who do require single accommodation this should be requested when booking and, if available, the normal supplement will be payable.

Practical information

The 4th McCabe Sponsored Walk

I hope you agree, we have come up with a different idea for our 4th Sponsored Walk. Our walk is divided into four parts and covers the Holy Land from south to north. The first three sections will be familiar to many, but our final walk is I hope new to most. On our last day we will walk in the Huleh Valley nature reserve, renowned for its bird life, and from a pilgrimage perspective near to Caesarea Philippi , a source of the River Jordan, in the foothills of Mt Hermon, which we will visit.

Our four Walks

Jerusalem: From our hotel, we will walk around the walls to the Wailing Wall, then through the Old City and along the Via Dolorosa to the Holy Sepulchre, a distance of about four miles. We will stop at sites en route and pray and worship together.

St George’s Monastery: A shorter walk in spectacular scenery. We will walk down in to the Wadi to the monastery and return the same way. The distance is about two miles.

Sea of Galilee: Our walk takes us part of the route of our last Sponsored Walk between Tabgha and the Jordan River. Distance up to five miles.

Huleh Valley: A circular walk around the nature reserve of about seven miles. Golf carts are available for the less able.

The challenge

We are asking all participants to raise a minimum of £300 sponsorship. All of the money raised will go to projects supported by The McCabe Educational Trust. None of it will be used for administration or travel costs.

You will visit the Jeel al Amal Boys Home and the Al Shurooq Blind school during your time in Jerusalem. Both of these institutions will benefit from your fundraising. Emphasize to your supporters that all money raised will directly help needy children.

Sponsorship

We will send you an official sponsorship form for you to collect support. You can also set up your own donations page affiliated to the McCabe website Just Giving pages. Follow some simple steps and your supporters can donate on-line. Call the McCabe office and we will help you set this up.

Fitness Levels

Each of our walks during the week will be relaxed and we will cater for what we expect to be a mixed ability group. As with all of our Sponsored Walks the emphasis is on participation and a coach will accompany us. Those unable to walk long distances will walk the parts they can and be transported the rest of the way.

We will walk in smaller groups for our first three walks, but enjoy a group experience on the culmination of our week when we walk in the Huleh Valley.
