The Revd Andrew McCabe MBE has spent his life In India helping needy children and underprivileged communities. His most recent initiative, a health clinic for the Tharu tribe in a remote jungle area on the border of Nepal, has been for the most part funded by Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh, which raised £26,000 as part of its bi-centenary celebrations last year. The McCabe Educational Trust has agreed to help with co-ordinating the funding. Last January, work was started on creating the infrastructure for the clinic and recruiting staff. Peter Grainger, “Pastor at Large” for Charlotte Chapel, recently visited the project with his wife Nita. We are delighted to be able to give his report on the excellent work being carried out there and the progress which has been made.

O God, you who are the God of a thousand faces, yet whom nothing can reveal so completely as the face of the child in Bethlehem. Continue in our lives the mystery of his birth ; may your Son become flesh in us, so that we may be for all those whom we meet an experience of your love.

The Lazarus Home for Girls is just one of the projects that the McCabe Educational Trust supports on a regular basis with your help. We recently received a letter from Samar Sahhar, enclosing a very heartfelt and touching composition written by one of the girls; a girl who has been a victim of the most terrible physical abuse and suffered trauma from a very young age.
It was written entirely by her and with no input from staff. It is simply entitled “Orphan”.

We are at the half way point in our fund-raising year and I am delighted to report that donations from our supporters have increased by 18% compared to the same period last year - a magnificent result in these difficult times. A Palestinian student has been selected for Music Therapy training in London. Thirteen years ago, the McCabe Educational Trust in partnership with the Pahar Trust built a school in the village of Daduwa in Nepal. The village is situated in a spectacular location in the foothills of the Himalayas and until very recently was only accessible on foot. A dirt track now connects the village to Pokhara but only sturdy four-wheel drive vehicles can attempt the journey! Last month, our chairman and a McCabe party visited the school to see how our investment had changed life for the children of the village.

The elders of the village of Oberammergau met on the evening of Friday 17 April and, during a four hour closed meeting, elected the cast. 1,834 adult villagers and 638 children put their names forward to be part of the play. To take part, you must either have been born in the village or have lived there for twenty years. Everyone eligible was given a role.
Some villagers specifically asked to be Roman soldiers as they are the only participants allowed to cut their hair! For the others, a ban on haircutting has already been in place since Ash Wednesday as no wigs or false beards are used in the performances.

Eileen Russell, a McCabe pilgrim, felt challenged during Lent last year “to leave her comfort zone and do something for the good of others.” Eileen has just returned from an eight week placement as a volunteer in Bethany at the Lazarus Home for Girls and her report which we publish in our Easter newsletter gives a very personal insight into daily life at the home. This is a story of light shining out from great darkness and an inspiration to us all this Easter.

The McCabe family has a history in India dating back to 1921 when Alistair McCabe’s grandfather, George, travelled to India as a missionary with the Regions Beyond Missionary Union. Alistair’s father, also George, served in the mission field at Dr Graham’s Homes in Kalimpong. George’s brother followed in their father’s footsteps, and in 1991 The Revd Andrew McCabe was awarded the MBE for missionary work in India.
The McCabe Educational Trust is a partner in Andrew’s ministry with our support of fifty boys at the Anand Niwas Boys Home at Nawabganj. This month we would like to introduce you to Andrew’s latest project.

The McCabe Educational Trust is responding to an appeal from the Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem with a donation of £7,000 offering immediate assistance to the Al Ahli hospital in Gaza. The hospital is an integral part of the work of the Diocese and a Christian witness to a beleaguered community.
We are grateful to the congregation of Dunfermline Abbey who have already sent us a large donation from a retiring collection, and to Fr. Aquilina, going on pilgrimage to Jerusalem in February, who will deliver personally a donation from his pilgrim party.

Two men from Stormont in East Belfast recently undertook a sponsored walk of 150 miles, and raised £11,000 for Jeel al-Amal and the Lazarus Home.
The Revd David Humphries, Rector of Stormont, is a regular tour leader to the Holy Land, and in recent years has developed a good working relationship with McCabe Pilgrimages. His good friend David Davies accompanied him on this year’s pilgrimage and visited the orphanages for the first time. Moved by what they experienced, the two Davids decided to embark on the walk, which they named the “Jeel 150”, and they caught the interest and imagination of their fellow parishioners.

McCabe have just adopted 50 boys! The McCabe family have a history of missionary service in India dating back to 1921. The Revd Andrew McCabe continues the family tradition and was awarded the MBE for his work among the poor and needy. One of Andrew’s long-standing commitments is to 200 orphans at the Anand Niwas Boys Home near Lucknow. The home is struggling financially and the number of boys arriving is increasing. We are delighted to help. Our initial commitment will care for 50 boys and our ambition is to increase this number to 100. We have a vision at McCabe of making a difference in the countries we visit.

The sounds of drums and Palestinian music are filling the air of Bethany as the girls of the Lazarus Home perform a folkore dance, so beautifully dressed that they look exactly like the flowers that came out of the seed which was planted ten years ago to start our Home. Today we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Lazarus Home.
Our festivities are introduced by the 8 year old Samah who gives a speech in Arabic thanking our guests, the social welfare office and her teachers at the school. Everybody is amazed at her reading. 10 year old Nadia also gives a wonderful speech.
